What is an illustrator?

punchINK TO PAPER
Back in the day, illustrators were considered ink to paper. Officially, PUNCH was thought to be the first published works using illustrations;  1841 -2004. The artists’ drawings were done with black ink.  Typically, children’s books were the most popular users of illustrations. Remember Beatrix Potter? All those beautiful pictures. Her original book was done with black and white illustrations she drew herself.  Charles Dickens book would be another book with illustrations since fiction needed drawings to illuminate the story.

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT? An illustration is a visualization or a depiction made by an artist, such as a drawing, sketch, painting, photograph, or other kind of image of things seen, remembered or imagined, using a graphical representation. The word comes from the latin word illustra’tio, illu’stro meaning enlighten, irradiate. by wikipedia.com

Dan Brown talked about a different kind of enlightenment with the “Illuminati” made popular in The Da Vinci Code. Imagination and the artists talent for drawing an illustration is what its all about.

Some artists, like Frank Bailey work with retail manufacturers to draw the new shoe design. These designs are sent to the factory to make the prototype. Detail is everything to make an exact likeness. A good illustrator has this ability.
